Petra, Jordan

After spending time in Wadi Rum we headed to the ancient city of Petra. It was named one of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. This ancient city dates back to 3000 BC and was a booming trading site between 400 BC – 100 AD. It’s famous for its tombs and temples carved into sandstone cliffs. The city is hidden away in ragged canyons in the desert, and it was lost to the western world for hundreds of years until it was rediscovered in 1985.

We spent two days here hiking. Walked several miles and up hundreds of stairs. I was shocked at how large the site was! I’ve only ever seen pictures of the treasury so I had no idea how far it expanded beyond that point. This is the number one tourist attraction in Jordan, and it was well worth a visit. Parts of Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, The Mummy Returns, and Transformers were filmed here.
