A must see fairy tale town in Europe

You’ve probably never heard of the town called Cesky Krumlov located about 3.5 hours south of Prague in the Czech Republic. I know I hadn’t until I started researching the destinations for my trip to Europe last year with Geckos Adventures. I remember typing “Cesky Krumlov” into the search engine and I was taken aback by the images that resulted. It looks just like a fairytale! I couldn’t believe it, and how had I never heard about it until now?

Krumlov Castle

The number one tourist attraction in Cesky Krumlov is the castle complex that dates back to 1240. It was ruled by the powerful Rosenberg family from 1302-1602. The town eventually became a property of the state after WWII but fell into disrepair during the communist era. It was then restored and made a national monument in 1989 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Town Square

Another main attraction not to be missed is the bright and colorful town square. As you wander up and down the cobblestone streets you’ll notice several quaint restaurants, cafes, and boutiques.

Medieval Feast

The medieval vibe has definitely returned after the town’s restoration. We ate dinner at a restaurant called U Dwau Maryi and shared a traditional bohemian feast of chicken, rabbit, and pheasant. It was a really fun and unique experience.

I still can’t believe a place like this actually exists, and that I’d never heard about it until now. If you enjoy fairy tales you should consider adding Cesky Krumlov to your bucket list. It’s an easy day trip from Prague, and a town I’ll never forget!
